A Cemetery Adventure

I love cemeteries! Weird, huh? But hear me out! They are filled with history, are generally peaceful and beautiful and contain all kinds of interesting things. What's not to love? I've wanted to do a cemetery scavenger hunt for ages and I could think of no one better to accompany me than my mother. See, we have wandered through many a cemetery in the past, she introduced me to "Find a Grave" and my general interest in the historically macabre comes from her.

Now, don't think this was a tour of the creepy but rather a search for the history of an area through imagery, trinkets and titles. Actually, it reminded me of a project done in my college Sociology class that required us to wander around the city cemetery uncovering the history of our area through the graves it held. Absolutely fascinating!

Here's what we were looking for and I have to say I was shocked by the things that were hard to find in the older city cemetery. No benches, no "beloved"... very much marks of the area and time period but other "treasures" were beautiful, poignant and reflective. Definitely a fall activity I'd recommend to anyone.

A broken grave.

An obelisk. The cool thing is this is my great, great, great, great grandfather that I didn't even know was buried in Mississippi until I started doing genealogy research!
