By now you should know I like odd books and I have been waiting for this one for ages! I loved Caitlin’s first two books, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “From Here to Eternity”, both fun deathy books, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one which unlike her first two focuses more on death from a child’s point of view. In fact, this book is specifically built upon questions Caitlin has been asked by tiny mortals as she describes them.
Turns out children want to know the dirt on death and have yet to decide it’s taboo to ask these things out loud. Also, turns out that I want to know the dirty details as well, so this is a perfect intersection.
Some of the questions include:
Why do we turn colors when we die?
Do conjoined twins always die at the same time?
What would happen to an astronaut body in space?
Can I be buried in the same grave as my hamster?
And the titular When I die, will my cat eat my eyeballs?
“Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?” is a quick read answered in terms and descriptions for the youngest Deathling without being childish. It’s also perfect as we go into the fall to satiate your need for a bit of morbidity mixed with humor and retro pop culture references. Like her other books, this one has beautiful artwork throughout though it is stylized in a new way.
Overall, I think this is the perfect Saturday afternoon read for the fall and if you are the least bit curious about what goes on behind closed mortuary doors this will surely keep you entertained.
