If you are looking for a sweet and timeless romance that can be read in an afternoon this may be your book! Montgomery weaves a story of a man, Eric, who stumbles upon love in the most unexpected of places and with the most unexpected of women, Kilmeny. While initially captivated by Kilmeny’s beauty, Eric finds her innocence, talent and personality even more mesmerizing but faces his greatest challenge when he decides that she is the one woman meant for him. Getting her to fall in love and more importantly confess that love is far more complicated than he first imagines.
As with all of Montgomery’s stories, “Kilmeny of the Orchard” is filled with beautiful and alluring descriptions that draw you into the world of Prince Edward Island and the lives of all the characters. I always get lost in her world when reading any of her books. I often glance up from a page only to realize that I was not walking the shoreline or the strange red roads of PEI.
I will say that the major difference between this book and her more famous titles is the straightforward nature. It is quite a short, stand alone title and therefore it doesn’t stray into side adventures in the same way her Anne and Emily books wander. This doesn’t make it any less enjoyable and rather perfect for a rainy afternoon!
